Recognized by sight: The pea-like interior chambers and white latex make this almost guaranteed. In my experience it has to be either Leucogaster or Leucophleps, but without a voucher collection, there is no positive way to identify it to species. Next time you find one, dry it, and mail the specimen, along with any notes of where it was found and what nearby trees to: Dr. James Trappe, c/o Forestry Sciences Lab, 3200 Jefferson Way, Corvallis, OR 97330. Identification is free, and the specimen will be added to the OSU Herbarium for future comparisons.

There are lots of other hypogeous ascomycetes, maybe 30 genera!

You can’t get to first base without seeing the spores but, Barssia looks promising because it forms small hollow chambers.

Summary: It’s an asco!

OK Gang, back to the drawing board…I just heard from Andy Methven, who did the microscopy on this beast; this cool little critter has asci and ascospores!!!
