Observation: Tapinella atrotomentosa (Batsch) Šutara (9009)

When: 2008-08-09
Collection location: Clinton, Whidbey Island, Island Co., Washington, USA [Click for map]
Who: Sam Linse (BearwoodSam)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found on a decaying stump in mature mixed coniferous forest. Cap is velvety as well as the stipe. Young gills are white and decurrent. The entire group is approximately 5 inches across.
I’m thinking it’s Panus, but not sure.

Summary: T. atrotomentosa

was published in 1992 according to Index Fungorum. I just added the citation to the page for the name. I’ve heard that it is well supported based by additional evidence including it being saprotrophic rather than mycorrhizal as the real Paxillus species are.

Summary: Tapinella atrotomentosa all the way

The hairy stipe is quite obvious. Typically, Panus conchatus has a nice blue/lilac color when young, it typically turns brown later…
