Summary: Horribly enough for IDers, THREE almost identical species occur in the East!
S. confusus, dryopophilus and floccopus. And two of those (dryophilus and floccopus) have completely reticulated spores. But apparently, according to Dr. Sundberg, one of those species is restricted in range to the Gulf Coast. I will wait for Dr.Sundberg to weigh in for the particulars.
BTW, all three species quickly stain red-orange…so no help there!

Summary: Some bruise red
Some of the Old men of the Woods bruise red, and others bruise black. I have a picture of a red bruiser somewhere.

Summary: 2 species look the same!
It looks like the TWO Strobilomyces found in eastern USA look very, very similar. Here are links to both of them and unless you can see the differences in the spores, they seem indistinguishable, at least to me!
Spores warty to partially reticulated = Strobilomyces confusus
Spores reticulated = Strobilomyces floccopus
