Summary: Not a perfect key

Darv, I used the same key, and went straight on S. cepa, because I considered it smooth, not scaly. Funny that the description afterwards describes S. cepa like this: “Peridium thin (1-2 mm); when mature forms large irregular scales over top by cracking of surface”.
A key doesn’t work well when “scales” means different things at different occasions.. but I think any key is useful, as long as it covers all the known species and is followed by good descriptions (and preferably pictures too).

Summary: Scleroderma cep

Scleroderma cepa did not fit well in the key because of the cracks in the peridium and the color of the gleba, but considering the stem it looks like a better fit. We could use a better key for the West Coast of the USA.

Summary: Very small stem

Not verrucosum with such smooth surface and tiny “stem”. Why not S. cepa?
