Observation: Agaricus campestris L. (8219)

When: 2008-07-01
Collection location: Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co.,California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Debbie Drechsler (debdrex)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Fruiting in a small (3) group on a lawn. First seen in button stage. Gills, made visible by slug feasting, were bright pink. Pileus white with tan scales and short, stumpy stipe. Pileus 5.2cm across and stipe 2cm. Image 15160.

Went back next day to check progress. Nearly defeated by gardeners who attacked with vigor but left one specimen intact. Gills were now pale brown and fell short of the margin of the pileus, leaving a distinct overhang of pileus. Annulus indistinct. Pileus now 7.4cm. Image 15161.

Twenty-four hours later the gills were dark chocolate brown. Image 15162.

Spore print dark brown. I wasn’t able to connect my specimens with A. campestris until I saw some pictures of scaled specimens on Mykoweb and Dimitar’s website.
