Observation: Caloscypha fulgens (Pers.) Boud. (7642)

When: 2008-05-29
Collection location: Edgewood Blue, British Columbia, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Edgewood Blue (46)

Notes: cup fungus, solitary, in duff
ST: none
CAP: 12-15mm wide, brilliant yellow-orange fertile surface, discoid, edges curled up a bit, lower surface paler and v v min felty, discoloring when handled
ASCI: ~10 µm wide, broadly rounded tips
SPORES: 8 per ascus, round, smooth, v finely textured inside, ~6 µm wide
PARAPHYSES: well-hidden, bright yellow-orange, apparently mostly smooth?

These are supposed to turn bluish or greenish on handling; mine just sort of turn blackish. But everything else matches well. In particular, round spores seem to be reasonably unusual among ascos.

Sorry, no photo, my camera has died.
