Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Edgewood Blue (46)
Notes: On birch twig (Betula papyrifera), probably only dead for less than a year. Visible as these tiny (0.5-1mm wide), cute little coral-pink warts that burst through the thin bark like tiny popcorn. The warts appear to be pycnidia (or whatever the mycological equivalent term is for this common lichen structure), composed of a thick gelatinous mass of conidia. The conidia are hyaline and elliptical, 6.5-8.5×2.5-3.5um (just measured a bunch off of the photo and recorded extremes). The hyphae on which the conidia are borne are themselves hyaline, septate, equally thick, occasionally branching, and potentially quite long (easily up to 40-50 um). Apparently this is an ascomycetes related to Hypocrea.

Summary: thanks!
Thanks! I’m really pulling out every stop to try to find anything (nonlichenized) worth posting up here in the arctic winter! :) It was very fortuitous that I stumbled on the CFS page for this fungus accidentally while reasearching the Fomes fomentarius. I said “oh my god! that’s what that stupid pink thing is that’s been sitting on my desk for weeks!” and sure enough… Where would one even begin to key out an obscure asexual fruiting body like this anyway???
