Find:
Observation: Scleroderma laeve Lloyd (566)

When: 2006-06-05
Collection location: DreamWorks Campus, Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Sclerodermae (10)

Notes: Fruiting under a tall skinny cypress(?) on the DreamWorks campus. Also near some live oaks.

I’ve seen Scleroderma fruitings in this location before, but this is a different location than the ones reported a few weeks ago in observation 560.

Initially identified by sight as S. cepa. I was confident this is a Scleroderma, but not completely confident of the species.

Looking at the spores they are definitely spiny not reticulate. The spore sizes I measured from one specimen were 10-15 microns. Based on the descriptions in Mushrooms Demystified this makes S. laeve the best match. However, at the same time I looked at the spores for a collection from Brubank and while they are in the roughly the same size range, the DreamWorks one had fewer, thinner, longer spines than the one from Burbank. However, it is worth noting that DreamWorks specimen had been dried and frozen, whereas the Burbank one was still fresh.
