Find:
Observation: Hydnum umbilicatum Peck (3706)

When: 2005-11-08
Collection location: Lambton County, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Rex (Rex Bartlett)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Fruiting much later in the year locally than the larger H. repandum, I find these associated with Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) & Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobis). The pileus is more colorful than H. repandum and the mushroom as a whole never reaches proportions in size like H. repandum. They also tend to be more susceptible to insect infestations than H. repandum.
I would like to compare them to Hydnum rufescens, but understand they don’t appear in N. America.
