Observation: Calvatia fragilis (Vittad.) Morgan (1139)

When: 2006-11-25
Collection location: Whitethorn, Humboldt Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Sanctuary Forest Class - November 2006 (18)

Notes: The best id I’ve been able to come up with is Calvatia fragilis. The species is mentioned in Mushrooms Demystified, but there aren’t a lot of details. Calvatia fumosa is also a possibility.

One other interesting note. The person who brought it in thought it was a young earthstar since they had found some sort of earthstar not long before in the same area. However, this seems large for a young earthstar and the collector mentioned that this one was growing right on the surface whereas the earthstar seemed more buried. I guessed that the earthstar was probably Scleroderma geaster.

The overall size is 6.9-7.4cm. The peridium is 2mm thick.

The specimen was collected as part of a class I taught for the Sanctuary Forest. Overall it was very poor collecting in the Briceland area this year. I believe the reason was an early cold snap which shutdown most of the mycorhizal species. This list are species that were brought to the class for identification. There is a separate list for specimens actually found in the Sanctuary Forest.

Summary: Not Handkea fumosa

In my experience, Handkea fumosa (Calvatia fumosa) has a peridium usually 4 or more mm thick, often over 6mm thick.

Summary: Mycenastrum corium?

The literature talks about how Mycenastrum corium is often found with Calvatia fragilis. Old M. corium resembles Scleroderma geaster when it opens up. Also Calvatia fragilis resembles C. cyathiformis but is smaller overall and has almost no sterile base. A pair of unusal gasteromycetes!
